    A pad tends to not have a hard cover like a book, and the pages are usually meant to be torn out. Whereas a notebook may be hard bound and the pages not intended to be removed. Also a pad can be for drawing, or other purposes, whereas a notebook is normally for writing in.

    Various pads for writing in can still be called notebooks however.
