Hello everyone,
Which tense should I use in here? Both seem correct to me, but I'm not sure.

As he had done his homework, Tom began to write his journal.
As he did his homework, Tom began to write his journal.

Thanks in advance.

If Tom thinks his homework includes writing his journal, #2 is OK. Otherwise, only #1 works.

"As he did his chores, he listened to music"
"As he walked to the store, he whistled a tune"

These things are being done in conjunction, Akasaka. As OldMike says, Tom would have to be writing in his journal at the same time as he is doing his homework to use the second sentence.
