past perfect vs past simple

Raul has just won the first spelling competition prize.
Raul and his sister Gayathri (study) hard to reach the final, which was shown on TV in the US. MR. Hathwar helped his children beforehand by checking meanings of words. He was confindent they would do well. Raul even (stop) playing computer games to concentrate on learning spelling.

    I would use the past perfect in both cases as these actions precede their appearance on TV. But I'm Russian so I am not sure if it's correct or not.
