Hospitals and clinics have responsibilities for staff credentialing and patient safety and should have programs for responding to concerns about impaired physicians. Health care institutions are setting up programs to identify physician impairment before incidents raise concerns about patient safety. As physicians become older, they are at risk for declines in cognition, dexterity, and sensorimotor agility, which can impair patient care.
