"Après avoir servi dans l'infanterie et les dragons de 1776 à 1779, il devient l'un des peintres de la Cour."

I cannot believe this general (Jean-François Carteaux, 1751-1813) became a painter, or a painter and decorator (since he was later employed in a variety of military and administrative posts), therefore I have to assume that 'peintre' in this context means he became one of the Court's 'decorations,' in the sense that he was perhaps something of a dandy or a 'chouette.'

Is there a sense of the word 'peintre' that might justify this assumption?

Merci par avance
