per-word or per word

If I say "the per word rate is $0.25", do I need a hyphen between "per" and "word'?

There's lots of information for attributive nouns and compound nouns, but I can't find anything for a preposition + noun combination like this.

Thanks.

Yes, when it precedes the word "rate", it's being used as a compound adjective and needs the hyphen. Otherwise, it doesn't: The rate is $0.25 per word.
