Can someone please explained to me what exactly a "percentile" is? I just finished reading two different definitions of it but they are confusing. Could you please give me some examples as well and how it differs from percent?

percentile means one of the 100 equal groups that a larger group of people can be divided into, e.g. Overall these students rank in the 21st percentile on the tests - that is, they did worse than 79 per cent of all children taking the test. Hope that helps
