Perdre l'insouciance

How would ou say in english "perdre l'insouciance"

The context is: Depuis des décennies, s’affrontent les adultes au détriment des enfants et adolescents qui en perdent la fraicheur et l’insouciance de leur âge.

"For decades, adults have been at war with each other at the expense of children and teenagers who are losing their innocence and insouciance of their age"

Thank you for your help.

Why does the aggressiveness of adults make children lose their innocence?? I don't see the logic.
However .... to the cost/at the expense of children and adolescents who are (thereby?) losing their freshness/innocence and the devil-may-care attitudes of their generation.
