a. When I was young, I couldn't stay up late.
b.When I was young, I mightn't stay up late.

c. When I was young, I wasn't permitted to stay up late.

Can a and b, be used instead of c?
To me, a is correct, but b sounds wrong.

    (a) is correct but could be ambiguous. It can either mean (c) or "I was not capable of staying up late."
    (b) is not used.
    (c) is correct, and might be preferred if you want to eliminate the possible ambiguity of (a).
