Hi guys,

I found this Afghan story, دختر آفتاب و دیو سیاه.

Anyway, there is a grammatical form that is irritating me, as in the following sentences:
آن‌وقت همه‌جا تاریک می‌شد، تاریکِ تاریک؛ آن‌قدر تاریک که چشم چشم را دیده نمی‌توانست

مرد‌ها و بچه‌ها نیز در کوچه‌ی آن‌ها جمع شده بودند تا شاید دختر موی طلایی را یک نظر دیده بتوانند

There is no such form in Iranian Persian, is there?

Yes, the modal توانستن in Dari behaves like this:

کرده میتوانی

which in modern Iranian Persian would look like:

میتوانی بکنی

Of course, forms like توانی کردن or توانی کرد are common in Classical Persian and are similar to the Dari form, albeit they use the infinitive or past (کردن، کرد) while Dari uses past participle (کرده).

I think so, but the other way is more common. I don't know if one is considered more formal than the other.

I think I have seen this style in Persian poetry.

Found the one I had in the back of my mind, by خیام:
من بی می ناب زیستن نتوانم

There are others with گفتن گرفتن etc.
