    They are probably cognates going back to a proto-Indo-Iranian word (something like *namas = worship, adoration) as the word existed in the oldest stages of both languages, namely, Vedic and Gathic. I don't know if there is any cognate in other IE languages.

    P.S. namaste doesn't mean "bowing to salute pagan gods", it means " worship/adore [the divine in] you".
