What is physical heaving and how can it be doubled? Excerpt from Stanley Middleton's novel Holiday.

Narrator is a father suffering after his child death.

'He in the scullery was shaken with gusts of sorrow, physical heaving that doubled across his body.'

thanks in advance

This is figurative language, bajtucha. I suppose that "physical heaving" describes the way his body shakes with "gusts of sorrow."

"Doubled across his body" in this sentence should mean little more than "passed through his body." Once again, this language isn't really meant to convey physical sensations precisely. Instead, it is vague, literary language that describes how this man felt after his child died.
