Hi,

could anyone help? What does "physically at ease in the world" mean? Does it imply "be in a good shape"?
Thanks.

"Tall and with a compact, muscular build, Max Tudor was a man physically at ease in the world."

Please give us the source of your quote (publication and author), as well as context (if Max is a fictional character, a brief description; if real, who was he?).

It does not imply "in good shape" ( which you are already told by "a compact, muscular build") as much as it implies being comfortable in his own body, and expressing self-confidence through his movements. Think of people you know who are nervous or timid, and who show that by the way they stand and move. This man is the opposite of that.

Max is a fictional character, actually one of the main characters in the book by G.M.Malliet - Wicked autumn.
    Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot. Your explanation is just brilliant! I know the phrase "feel at ease", though I have never come across it in this context.
