Hello,

In the context below, what does the exact meaning of “appreciate”? acknowledge, understand, or what?

Traditional cultures reluctant to disclose serious diagnoses may be changing. Attitudes change. On a questionnaire carried out in 2009 in China, 44% of family members of cancer patients said that patients should be told the truth. In another study in China, over two thirds of cancer patients said they knew their cancer diagnosis immediately upon diagnosis, and almost half said patients should be told before their family members. Of note, studies show that one half or more of patients found out their diagnosis themselves. In the United States, physicians should appreciate that patients from traditional cultures may acculturate to prevalent US beliefs about disclosure of diagnoses.
