pinstripe

a thin line woven into cloth (MED)
a very narrow stripe in cloth, especially of the type used for formal suits (OED)
Pinstripes are very narrow vertical stripes found on certain types of clothing. Businessmen's suits often have pinstripes. (Collins Cobuild)
a very thin stripe especially on a fabric (M-W)
a very narrow stripe in fabric or the fabric itself, used esp for men's suits (Collins)

Some dictionaris use "on", some "in".
I think that's because the first consider pinstripe to be perceived by our organ of vision (we see stripes as a pattern on the suit), so they use "on"; the others consider pinstripe to be "line woven into cloth" and thus "in" is used. Am I right?
Thanks.
