Don't think so. It looks like a pretty common long-time-established word to me.

-eta is the usual feminine diminutive in Catalan: coseta, pobreta, maneta, cullereta... What I'm not sure is why the <j> of platja changes to <g> in platgeta, but surely a native will let us know.
