Play portion

Here's the text extract:
Also the study did not observe the children in their natural environment, but instead with both a formal portion and an informal play portion with the examiner.

Could somebody explain it to me in a non-complicated way so that I could be able to translate it to my language?
Thanks in advance :)

A "formal portion" would be something like a lesson or where the children were given specific tasks to perform.

An "informal play portion" would be when the children were allowed to play with one another, doing what they wanted (within reason), but watched by the examiner.

If you change "portion" to "part" or "session" or "section" it may become clearer.
