plus ou moins

Bonjour,

Pouvez-vous me dire si cette traduction est acceptable: "Elle le voyant, il devait plus ou moins s'attendre à ce qu'elle crie" ==> "He probably expected her to scream more or less."
Merci d'avance!

    Hello,

I would probably say, "he must have expected, more or less, for her to scream" or "he must have more or less expected her to scream". Unless I'm mistaken, the "more or less" refers to the expectation, and not to the screaming. I'm a little confused about the "elle le voyant" construction though?

An alternative and very common expression in English is "half expected", which would make the sentence a little lighter than "... must have more or less expected ...":

"... he must have half expected her to scream."

I agree with Wordsmyth, and I was also thinking of he somehow must have expected her to scream... At any rate, plus ou moins applies to his expecting her to scream, not to her screaming.
