"pomme de terre" and "patate", are they the same thing? What's the difference between them?

i don't know any difference between those two terms. maybe "patate" is a less formal term...
The consensus from the French Only discussion seems to be that patate is both an informal equivalent of pomme de terre and a word often associated with sweet potatoes.
