    I'd say it's a relatively new verb (pilotować) which comes from the word pilot - a tour guide or a person who helps the driver during races.

    How about:
    nudge the errand in the right direction
    manage the business

    I would add to BezierCurve's comment on pilotować that it is most often used in the context of car racings, and outside it it doesn't sound equally good, at least to these ears.
