Pounding/beating

Hello, which is more natural to you: "My heart was pounding/beating hard when she told me the bad news." Can I use past continuous to mean this? Thank you in advance.

Either of these would work, and both are commonly used. In your example, I think pounding sounds better. Your heart can pound for a variety of reasons. If it is beating hard, it usually tends to be more from physical exertion or stress.
