With tourists pounding through Petra's tombs day after day, the fragile red sandstone is worn away t o powder.

How do you paraphrase pounding through? Walking heavily around?

I would interperate it as either "carelessly passing while disregarding the well-being of the sandstone" or "Continually passing so that the stone is inevitably worn down."
