préserver le muscle du catabolisme

I've run into this phrase, and not being a sport nutrition expert nor a professional body building coach, I find myself confused.
Catabolisme is the process of losing muscle mass, and I find it conflicting to talk of a product which "préserve le muscle du catabolisme".

Unless there's some odd use of the verb préserver, it appears to be a contradiction of terms to preserver or protect or retain muscle loss, especially when the user is specifically trying to gain muscle mass - can a native French speaker cast any light on this?

Thanks if you can :)
