pressure makes diamonds

Hi all.
Just have seen this quote (by General George S. Patton) as a chest tattoo in some tattoo mag.
Could you please help me to define the meaning of it?
My guess is "making hard attempts and having commitment (pressure) a man can achieve every desirable goal". Is that right? Or I'm misled?

    Hardship builds character.

The idea is that something very ordinary and common (like coal), under pressure is transformed into something of great value.

So figuratively, 'pressure' refers to hardship or adversity - something that really tests the common person to show what they are made of, and can become by endurance of an ordeal.
