Hi,

I'm translating the Help/Instructions section of a risk management computer program from Spanish to English. I need to translate a paragraph concerning instructions to the program administrator for establishing the levels of access available to the program users. There are various levels, allowing different actions such as data consultation, modification, deletion and so on. The heading for this sections is:

"Privilegios"

Obviously, I know that this could be translated into English as "Privileges" but I don't now whether this is common in computer terminology. Would something like "Access and Inputting Permission" or something along those lines be more appropriate?

Yes, "Privileges" is standard terminology in the context you so well described.

In my experience, instead of "privileges", we callled them "entitlements."

The context is that of user profiles in computer operating systems. The word "entitlements" isn't even on the neighborhod, nay, the horizon.

You're "entitled" to be blunt, my friend, even though your statement is much too general to be correct.

If you check the opening post of this thread, there is no mention of operating systems. (Don't get ahead of yourself.)

I worked for Citibank New York when we established the network of thousands of teller terminals. When someone signed on to one of these terminals, immediately the system determined his "entitlements", that is, what transactions could this user perform. It just so happens that I designed and wrote the entitlement module. I didn't pick the word entitlement. It was chosen by Citibank management.

I agree with coolbrowne, "privileges is standard terminology in IT for accessing any system, be it an operating or a "risk managent" system.
