Produce a long cane

Hello natives,

SOurce : Upstream Proficiency Virginia Evans

[...] "Why didn't you obey the prefect's order to get into bed?" asks the headmaster. "Because I don't respect them,' answers the boy, "The purpose of a public-school education, Paxman,' intones the headmaster, producing a long cane, "it is to teach you to respect things you do not respect".

I cannot think of any good meaning for the bolded phrase. Could you help me?

'...producing a long cane' - bringing out a long cane from somewhere, perhaps from behind his back.
