Promenade des Anglais

Could someone please tell me whether "Promenade" in the following context, taken from "1919" by John Dos Passos, means "Boulevard, public area, or street":
Time: 1919
Location: Nice, France
They got a good room in a hotel and walked through the streets in the cool sunshine among the wounded soldiers and officers of all the allied armies and srtolled along the Promenade des Anglais under the grey palmtrees ...

The Promenade des Anglais is a long road, street, boulevard - whatever you may choose to call it - that runs along the seafront in Nice. It's still there. At least, it was still there last Novermber when I walked along it :)

Check - yes, it's still there today CLICK.
