I always thought the word خرد ("wisdom") was pronounced with a kasrah to the first letter, i.e. kherad. However, I was listening to Shahnameh, and in the very first line the person reciting pronounces خرد with a fathah to the khaa, i.e. kharad. Is the latter pronunciation archaic?

For wisdom, I am only aware of "xirad". There is such a word with a fatHah (xarad) but it does not equate to wisdom.
