A rule for pronunciation that works most of the time is that a vowel followed by a single consonant and another vowel (usually an "e") makes the preceding vowel sound long -- kite, dine, super, shite, time. A vowel followed by a single consonant with no vowel after it, or double consonant makes a short vowel sound -- kit, shit, supper, dinner, Tim.
