proportions vs percentages

Spanish
"Surprisingly, the proportions/percentages of people aged between 40-49 who study for career reasons and who study for interest are equal, both at just above 40%."

Is it grammatical or correct to use proportion as a countable noun in this context?

Dictionaries label those nouns countable, so I feel I can use them as such.
