I know purple represent a kind of color, in this context What does "purple" mean?

One reason lawmakers have to draw such twisted districts to save their seats is that we are so much more purple than they'd like, a tangle of red suburbs of blue cities and blue counties in red states.

I am assuming this is an American context? Otherwise don't pay any attention to me. Purple is the mixture of red and blue. Reds are the Republicans; Blues are the Democrats, so in order to keep districts to one party or another, districts are redrawn to keep them either red or blue to prevent the untidy mess (and untidy electoral outcomes) that purple gives. Enough?
