Can one put someone down if that person is not present?

a. I am not putting your husband down when I say he buy cheap clothes. I do it myself. I think it is the right thing to do.

Could one say that if the husband is not around and cannot hear what is being said?

I guess this would be another way to do it:

b. I am not knocking your husband when I say he buy cheap clothes. I do it myself. I think it is the right thing to do.

The sentences are mine.

Many thanks.

Both sentences work even if that person is not present except I would use "buys" instead of "buy."
