Virgina Woolfの「To the lighthouse」に出てくる文章からの引用です。

下線部の訳が分かりません。

なんとなく「女王が泥の中から物乞いを持ち上げて足を洗ってあげている」状況を想像してしまいますが・・・、恐らく間違いだと思います。

それほど難しい単語が使われているわけでもないのに、何故か分かりません。

女王は泥の中にいるのでしょうか？　それとも泥の中にいるのは物乞いでしょうか？

「あたかも女王が泥から上がって・・・」の意味でしょうか？

それでも、まだ意味が分かりません。　女王は泥の中に普通は居ないと思いますし・・・。

The whole sentence is a metaphor to describe her "extreme courtesy".
It only confuses me a little that she chose to use "raising" there.

The "to wash a beggar's dirty foot" just part implies that she, although like a queen, is so friendly that she would wash a beggar's foot. A literal translation would be probably 物乞いの汚い足を洗うように ?

それでも、まだ意味が分かりません。　女王は泥の中に普通は居ないと思いますし・・・。

I'm not sure whether the "Like a queen's raising from the mud" part describes her shabby looks, likening it to someone coming out of the mud or whether it implies that she would go through the mud to help the beggar.

However one thing is for sure, the whole sentence implies that she is as friendly as a queen that would wash a beggar's foot. Rephrasing the same thing: She has a degree of friendliness that a queen would need to wash a beggar's dirty foot.

If I read the book and knew that she was a shabby looking person I'd believe the first interpretation is true.

やっと、なんとなく分かりました。　この文は始めの数ページ目に出てくる台詞なので、この女性がみすぼらしい見た目（shabby looks）なのか分かりませんが、話の始めは、この女性と亭主、亭主の友達との口論で埋まっています。

口論の中にあっても、なお優雅さと厳格さを保ち話す彼女を、「あたかも、泥の中から上がって、物乞いの足を洗うかのように、」と喩えたのだと思います。

丁寧なご解説ありがとうございます。

英語辞典を何冊か調べましたが、raiseには他動詞としての用法しかないようです。したがって女王が泥の中から上がるのではなく、女王が物乞いの足を持ち上げるという意味で理解すべきだと思います。女王や物乞いが泥の中にいるのかそうでないのかは、この文章では直接指示されていません。読者がある程度自由に考えてよいのではないでしょうか。

Well I find that part weird too. I can't say why but I don't think it's the leg that's being raised, I think I would at least expect "raising it" if she meant the leg and even then it would sound wierd because she's saying "it" before even saying what "it" is.

The implication that I saw is that either raise=rise in this case or maybe raising herself, though it's certainly weird...

By the way, I'd recommend Merriam-Webster's online dictionary.

なるほど！　とすると訳は「あたかも、女王が泥の中にある物乞いの足を洗うために上げるかのように」という訳になるのでしょうか？

この女性の極度にいんぎんな態度に対する比喩として、かなり日本人には難しい比喩ですね。

確かに上げられるのが足だったとしても、奇妙な文章ですね！

でも兎に角訳が分かったので、足を持ち上げて洗うという行為がどういうニュアンスをもっているのか、インターネットで検索して探すしかありません。

頑張って意味を理解してみようと思います。
