    Elles se sont vendues - the Queen's shilling is what a recruiting sergeant traditionally offered a potential recruit to drink to the health of the Queen or King, if he accepted he found himself in the army.

    I do not think the expression "bought the Queen's shilling" exists I only know "take the Queen's shilling"

    Well, that's the way they've used it here - any expression can be adapted anyway the writer or journalist wants to.
