What we do
We answer specific questions about Spanish or English words or short phrases that appear in a complete sentence, with context and background, in a manner that is respectful, helpful, and cordial.
The purpose of the forum is to be an extension of the wordreference.com dictionary by providing translations for any word or phrase that might be missing from that dictionary.
Where to ask a question
How to ask a question
1. Search first in the wordreference.com dictionary, using the search box at the top of this page. Below the dictionary definitions, there is a list of previous conversations (or “threads”) in the forum related to your search term.
3. In the thread title, put the specific word or short phrase you are translating, with no extra words (like “Spanish” or “question”). Click here for details about choosing a good title.
4. In the first post, include the key elements of context (click here for a detailed explanation of ‘context’):
One example per thread.
Asking and Answering – Additional Guidelines
Images may not be used in place of text. Since only logged-in users can see images in your posts, please type the source text, and use attachments only as additional context.
Do not post “bare” links to external sites without explaining the content of the link and/or quoting the contents of the linked page. Bare links to forum threads are acceptable.
Name the source of any quoted material from websites or print sources.
Five threads is the limit for one person to have open on the first page of any forum at one time. Be considerate of other members’ questions and avoid “flooding” the forum with your threads.
Use standard language, including correct spelling, capitalization, accents, and punctuation, to the best of your ability. To add special characters such as accents and tildes, use the Omega Tool (the 𝛀 symbol in the toolbar). Click here for details about how to type special characters.
Only English and Spanish are allowed in the Spanish-English forums – no other languages, please.
How to answer a question
See the section above for additional guidelines.
Be patient with, and respectful towards, your fellow members.
Focus on the question being asked, not on other topics. Each thread must have only one topic, and no chatting is allowed.
Do not provide answers to questions that lack context; if the original poster hasn’t provided the elements of context (as described above, in “How to ask a question”), please report the thread to the moderators or ask politely for context.
Do not guess at what the context might be or propose your own context. And please don't assume that others understand questions which are lacking in context just because their meaning seems clear to you.
To answer a question with multiple examples, please only address the first example, and report the post to the moderators.
How to report a problem
Please report any thread or post that has a problem or breaks the forum rules.
Examples: inappropriate tone, lack of context, proofreading requests, transcription requests, multiple topics or multiple questions, bad title, wrong forum, spam or promotion.
Click Report at the bottom of the post and submit the report form. The first available moderator will attend to the issue. Complex issues will be discussed by the team of moderators and may take time to resolve.
If you report a post or thread, please do not reply to it.

How to ask a question
1. Search first in the wordreference.com dictionary, using the search box at the top of this page. Below the dictionary definitions, there is a list of previous conversations (or “threads”) in the forum related to your search term.
- If your question is the same as the question in an existing thread, you are welcome to request clarification in that old thread. Please don’t contribute to old threads that lack the requirements of context (see step 4 for the basic elements of context).
- If you don’t find the answer to your question in the dictionary entry or in the previous forum threads, you can open a new thread.
3. In the thread title, put the specific word or short phrase you are translating, with no extra words (like “Spanish” or “question”). Click here for details about choosing a good title.
4. In the first post, include the key elements of context (click here for a detailed explanation of ‘context’):
- Ask a specific, clear question.
- Show us a complete sample sentence in which the word/phrase was used.
- Give details about the situation, the source, and the dialect of the speaker/writer.
- If your question is related to schoolwork or a test, you are required to show us your attempt to answer the question (for non-homework questions, no first attempt is required). Click here if you are a teacher or a student.
One example per thread.
- Each thread must deal with the usage of one word or short phrase within one specific context.
- To ask a question about a different word or phrase – or a different usage of the same word/phrase – please start a new thread. Do not request a list of terms within a category.
- Long texts will not be proofread. You may post a longer text (such as a complete paragraph) if it is background information to a specific question about a word, short phrase, or structure.
- Short texts can be proofread, but only if you ask a specific question about one part of the text.
- Transcriptions of audio or video files are not permitted.
- Ask a moderator's permission before posting a link to a video.
