So, fellow foruminians (ARG!), what shall we call ourselves? I for one, politely decline to wrap myself in the cloak of a forumminian, being neither French nor, ni mucho menos, darling.

The recommended 'inians' suffers from possible association with a word for autoctonous peoples, as pronounced by someone using ilicit substances. And were we to call ourselves the "Ites", not only would Sharon's insect phobia be aroused, we would be at risk of being confused with a Cockney pronunciation of Wuthering 'ites. I've never been Wuthered, and the thought terrifies me.

Please submit your ideas for a name for ourselves. Once decided, we can have the sweatshirts silk-screened, and Sharon can begin training the cheer-leading squad.

Time is short. Our first match is coming soon against the Manchester United
Threaders. We cannot go onto the field name-naked!
 
    • Alas, Cuchufléte! What a great "assignment" you have come up with for our delight... choosing a name, backing it up with a marketing rationale, thinking of promotional T-shirts, establishing a choreography for the cheerleaders (also known as the "on-camera talent") --that's so very much like a product launching!!! Let's get right to it...

    First of all, I'd go with Foreros... porque en lo que a asuntos del idioma se trata, nos lanzamos al ruedo como toreros: con determinación, agilidad, inteligencia y muuuuuucho estilo.

    Notas al calce para propósitos de mercadeo:

    1. "Foreros" tiene mayor factor de recordación por su proximidad a "toreros" (palabra con una sola ortografía, no tiene "s" o "c" intercambiables y no lleva tilde, guión o raya) y es una palabra conocida en todos los confines del mundo hispanoparlante.

    2. Tomando un préstamo o licencia poética de la palabra "torero", podemos hacer un interesante juego visual en la creación de nuestro logo. Los colores rojo (representando la capa), negro (representando el toro) y amarillo (representando el ruedo donde se lleva a cabo la acción, entiéndase el foro a donde todos nos "lanzamos") se prestan para combinaciones visualmente memorables... lo cual funcionaría estupendamente en camisetas, gorras y todo tipo de mercancía licenciada. Les adelanto que conozco un artista buenísimo en interpretaciones conceptuales.

    3. Contar con mercancía licenciada para nuestro equipo creará el muy deseable "efecto en cascada": hará que nuestro logo se convierta en un mensaje portátil capaz de llegar a un público más amplio que a la vez se interesaría por nuestro equipo de fútbol/soccer, lo cual aumentaría nuestra exposición y alcance, nos ganaría más adeptos y nos brindaría mayor presencia en la mente de los consumidores y de paso incrementaría nuestra participación en el mercado... lo cual a su vez también aumenta las probabilidades de que algún auspiciador corporativo se interese en apadrinarnos. Como todos saben... just ask any athlete, the real money is in the commercial endorsements.


    4. En cuanto a la composición de nuestro cuerpo de baile (a.k.a cheerleaders), podemos crear un concurso (estrategia que además de ser siempre bien recibida, atrae MUCHO al público) que incluya chicas (y uno que otro chico, no podemos discriminar porque nos demandan) provenientes de diversos países de habla hispana. Podemos limitar los ganadores a uno por país.. pero primero habrá que determinar el número de espacios que estarán disponibles. Sugiero una reunión con nuestra división legal (¿imagino que capitaneada por Mike Kellogg??) para orientación exhaustiva. Y prepárense compañeros, porque nos van a decir: "algunas restricciones aplican/some restrictions apply."

    ¿Qué se me queda, qué se me queda? Necesito un scratch pad para anotar las ideas y producir un borrador/draft más detallado.

    Rayos.... y luego de la selección del nombre hay que crear un lema/slogan.

    ¿Qué pensáis de foráneos??? Juega con el doble sentido de foro y de las nacionalidades, la mezcla de idiomas y culturas, que es un poco lo que este foro representa. Aunque la palabra no la acuñamos nosotros, existe ya...(just thinking aloud!)

    Me gusta la idea detrás de Foráneos, además rima con cráneo, pero no veo que tenga tanta aceptación en inglés, y nuestro nombre tiene que ser totalmente, o casi totalmente, bilingüe.

    Además Foreros Forever ! tiene ritmo y estilo, o no?

    As long as we don't have to be forumites, I have no steadfast opinion on what we should call ourselves.

    But as far as this is concerned, I do have an opinion. Here I had thought that I had finally found an area where I could be considered a worthy contributor, only to find that (without so much as a try-out) I have already been relegated to the sidelines...and put in charge of a gaggle of CHEERLEADERS ??!!

    Honestly, if I can't be on the team, I want to sit in the stands, drinking beer, and shouting imprecations at the ManchesterITES. (GO TEAM !! Wuther the bugs !!)

    You are so modest and humble that you missed the point entirely. Heading up the cheerleader squad---all male except for LauraN in her toreador pants--is an extra honor. The team performs precisely as you have stated:

    sit in the stands, drinking beer, and shouting imprecations


    As to the appelation of 'gaggle' for the men on the squad, don't you think you ought to get to know them better, so they may decide how they feel about being 'goosed'?

    As far as modest and humble, my understanding of "could be" was that it did express a doubt. If I came across wrong, and inadvertently offended, it was not my intention.

    If it is not too late to be in charge of the 'bevy' of cheerleaders, I promise not to 'grouse' about it. :D

    Que tal "contertulianos" o "tertulios". Asi se llaman en alt.usage.spanish. Le pregunté a mi maestro (de Argentina) acerca de eso. Ella me dijo que había sido mucho tiempo desde que ella oyó esa palabra.

    Viene de la palabra tertulia:

    foráneos no estaría mal, pero partamos del principio que somos una comunidad unida de "language lovers" y entonces que no somos foráneos unos de los otros ¿eh? ;)
    "forumers" me gusta, y además es el término que se utiliza en francés creo...



    o cómo matar dos pájaros de un tiro ;)

    Se le agradece la aclaración. Sabe Vd. que esto del tamaño no es nada fácil, que la medida cambia según las circunstancias en las cuales uno se encuentra o bien en las cuales quisiese encontrarse.

    Creo que me cabe bien una prenda--puede que deportiva--calurosa, con características suaves y acogedoras.

    Espero haberte contestado de una forma adecuada.

    O sea, que el tamaño siempre está en un estado de fluctuación continua... :rolleyes:
    Como mujer, te entiendo perfectamente. Nosotras las chicas entendemos de fluctuaciones de tamaño, sí señor... por eso de que siempre estamos a dieta. ;) Creo que las camisetas van a tener que ser "one size fits all".

    Sinceramente a mí no me suena mucho el término de forero, estoy de acuerdo en parte con Laura, pero no todo tiene solución morfológica... (toro < taurum ; foro < forum) la verdad no sé como se dice en inglés, pero el término forista fue el primero más adecuado que se me vino a la mente cuando pensé en aquellos que son protagonistas, forman parte o dirigen los foros. Por ejemplo acá en el Perú llamamos a las personas que dictan conferencias conferencistas, mientras que en la Península denominan a las mismas personas conferenciantes. Últimamente he escuchado este término tal vez debido a la conciencia del uso peninsular "más prestigioso" para algunos (intentan pronunciar vídeo, que es esdrújula, en vez del muy conocido video, palabra grave).

    Yo estoy más de acuerdo (léase que también respeto forero(a)s) co el término forista. La ventaja del uso de éste es que designa tanto a hombres como a mujeres. Pienso más en el inglés por su usual indiferencia a las desinencias de género.

    Bueno forum-fans, estoy de acuerdo con "foreros" - parece ser la opción más adecuada para los dos idiomas... también se puede desglosar así : For[/I- EROS... de Afrodita...

    Howeverrrrrrrrrrr,

    Florista sounds just like Florist en inglés, and we have been calling ourselves foreros for months now---though it seems like years.
    Here's the compromise offer. Crom can be a forista, and the rest of us shall continue to be foreros deformes.
