raised in judo

"we were raised in judo", does it mean they had judo lessons, or is there something I'm missing?

The narrator explains how he was fightplaying with his brothers: "We were raised in judo, did a lot of grappling, would play with sticks..."

It means that judo was a very big part of their lives when they were kids. Presumably they took lessons, though that's not obvious from the context you've given.

Note, though, that I myself would say, "We were raised on judo," but I suppose this is just a variation of the expression.
