Hi there,

“Hannah, quite worn out, lay down on the sofa at the bed's foot and fell fast asleep, Mr. Laurence marched to and fro in the parlor, feeling that he would rather face a rebel battery than Mrs. March's countenance as she entered.”

The book is set at the time of the US Civil War. To those on the northern "Union" side, the southern "Confederate" side were rebels, in revolt against the legitimate federal government. A battery here is an artillery unit. He would rather face a Confederate artillery barrage than the look on Mrs March's face.
