rebus = a word game or puzzle in which words have to be gussed from pictures or letters that suggest the sounds "that make them"

Hi,

In the note, I am with puzzle at the end ---can "that make them" be in this way that "that make the pictures or letters to be the words"?

For example, with "ewe" for a rebus, in "ewe" the word it want to express has to be quessed from the letter in itself that suggests the sound that make "ewe" to be "you".

Could you tell me the undersanding correct or not?

Thank your help.

Rebuses rely on pictures of things that are homophones for other words or parts of words.
Thus a picture of a sun rising (dawn) and a picture of a key could represent dawn-key = donkey.
The homophones are often very approximate.

...words have to be guessed from pictures or letters that suggest the sounds that make up the words.

    Preposition?

"Make up" here means "comprise", "constitute", "compose". There will probably be more than one picture for a multi-syllable word. For example, "humane" might be represented as "H + " (picture of ewe) " + " (picture of lion's mane).

Notice that "H" is part of the rebus. A rebus is often a combination of pictures and individual letters.
