recede vs withdraw

It is this theme (that virtue is decided by habit) that makes the rational ground of morality recede in the Nocomachean Ethics. (Acquinas on the twofold human nature, byJ. Bradley).

I want to ask whether "recede" here is interchangable with "withdraw", as the "recede" in "the army recedes to the bank of the river".

  • Not quite, ben. "Withdraw" has a more intentional flavor to it.

"recede" means, here, 'occupy a less prominent place.'

I might have the same feeling as yours, but was not able to say what you have just said. Thank you!
