- It seems he is using you as just someone to vent to and asking for your pity. That is self-centered, and no successful relationship can be self-centered. My personal opinion is there are too many red flags in this situation already to proceed onto anything more.

- "red flags" here means "disadvantages", right? :)

    I understand it as warnings. Isn't a red flag used in sports to banish someone from the grounds?

    No. It means warning signals. Red flags are commonly used (on a race track, at the beach) to indicate danger. What the speaker is really saying is that there are many indications that this is not the right sort of person to have a relationship with.

    You are right to think of it as a warning, for the reasons I gave above, but I believe you are thinking of the red card, which is rather different. The yellow card is the warning (that you may get a red card, which is more serious).
