Relative Clause

Hi my friends,

I came across with a sentence from a statute, which says, "This section applies as between contracting parties where one of them deals as consumer or on the other's written standard terms of business."

Can anyone explain the sentence structure of the underlined clause/phrase. Many thanks.

  • Hello, jackyipgood, and welcome to the forum. :)

As you may know, legal English has its own rules and conventions. The following is my understanding of the clause, but I am not a lawyer. I know we do have lawyers in the forum; perhaps one of them will join the discussion.

    1. This section applies as between contracting parties.
This section will be applied in the same way as it is between two parties to a contract

    2. where
if it is the case that

    3. one of them deals as consumer
one of the contracting parties is acting as a consumer

    4. or

    5. on the other's written standard terms of business.
one of the contracting parties is acting on the basis of the other party's written standard terms of business.

    Is that helpful at all?
