Please, does anyone know the "proper"" Italian for "remote control" - that flicker box thing with which we control our televisions without even getting out of the chair? And are there any commonly used slang words for it?
Many thanks

    Ciao,

I know that "television remote" is "telecomando", but what about other remotes, like one to a stereo, for example? What is "remote" translated to in that case, or in general?

    Grazie

    Hi!

A "remote control" is known by many other names as well, such as the "clicker", "changer", "splat", "magic hand", etc.

Whole these name are useful for TV, Hi-Fi, electric gates, etc

    Hi!

It could be "controllo a breve distanza".

Sì, però nel linguaggio comune si usa sempre - e semplicemente - telecomando:
il telecomando del cancello elettrico, dello stereo, del ventilatore a soffitto, del decoder, del videoregistratore...

Yup, the term "tele-" stands for "from afar" (deriving from the greek term for "far"), not for "television": telecomando is therefore anything whith which you may operate something else from afar, even though its common sense is restricted to the buttoned plastic boxes we're all used to. Something fancy may require another word. I'm 11 years late but I felt this could be useful.

    Mai sentito questi termini. :)

I might say 'the remote' (telecomando) but that's it.
We use many of them all the time here in the States! We don't use "splat" or "magic hand" but "controller", "clicker" and "remote" are very common.
