rigorous vs. vigorous

    I've always thought it should be vigorous exercise, but my friend from the U.S. says that rigorous is right and that vigorous sounds odd. So are they interchangeable? Or is this another case of BE vs. AE?

    They are different to me. "vigorous exercise" would be very strenous and full of action and movement. "rigorous exercise" might be tough, but it suggests to me disciplined and structured exercise more than anything else.

    I agree with Tazzler. Exercise could be vigorous, or rigorous, or both—but they are different things.
