When people are about to throw a party... "They turn on the stereo. They break out the best Scotch. They roll back the living room carpet and ring up the neighbors"...

I wonder "they roll back the living room carpet" means to unfold and spead the carpet back to the living room floor? or to roll the carpet and take it away?

    Hi May,

Its from the 50/60's I think when people had wooden floors and rugs rather than fitted carpet. To make it easier to dance, they would take up the carpet from the floor.

I suspect now, with the fashion for laminate flooring and rugs, the expression might get a second outing!. :)
