This is a fragment from a short story. It happens in Australia in 1960. The main character is moving to a new apartment (in a poor area):
"He moved his suitcase of books and his grocery carton of notes and manuscripts to a room with use of bath (two pounds, five shillings
per week) above the kitchen of a single-fronted house in Argyle Street, Fitzroy."
I would like to know the meaning of the underlined phrase, please. It might be an outdated expression.
