I happened to encounter this phrase " run by Germans" that I don't understand in the episode 19 of season 1 Desperate Housewives when Lynette's quarrelling with Mrs.McCluskey, Mrs.McCluskey said :" Go to hell!" and Lynette replied:"Run by Germans!"

So, what's your opinions?

Thx in advance.....

  • They show that show in China!? Anyways, Lynette is "completing" (adding to) McCluskey's sentence as a way to return his statement.

Go to [the] hell...run by Germans.

It is a reference to a joke about different nationalities.

    Heaven Is Where:
    The French are the chefs
    The Italians are the lovers
    The British are the police
    The Germans are the mechanics
And the Swiss make everything run on time

Germans are stereotypically hard-working and methodical, so if they run hell, all the furnaces will be operating all the time at the optimum temperature, thus a really "hellish" hell.
