satisfying split

It describes a technician preparing a coordinated explosion.

"He works the wired charge into the hole of the column with a sawed-off mop handle until it hits the back of the column with a satisfying split."

"split" gives me pause here : a noise ? a bump ?

    You have the right idea.
It's an onomatopoeia. I would call it a "splat", but I never worked with explosives, so I wouldn't know! :)
