'Say' vs 'reply'

Are both the words replied and said grammatical in the following context? Are they some kind of interchangeable?

1- "Where are you going?" I asked. "Home," he replied.

2- "Where are you going?" I asked. "Home," he said.

    Yes, many speech verbs can be used there. 'Reply' of course has a more specific meaning than 'say', and is interchangeable with 'answer' and 'respond'.
