Ciao!

I would like to know what this phrase means. I searched for the translation and it is translated literally as jolts of tension. I wonder what this really means. I have an inkling that it is an earthquake??

Am I right?

    • No, it has basically nothing to do with earthquakes. It's an unexpected sudden voltage variation/oscillation of an electrical supply - for instance, what happens when a lightning strikes during a thunderstorm.
    I'm not sure if voltage jolt is the right translation, though. I think that would translate scossa elettrica (the feeling you have when you touch an uncovered wire and the current flows through your body). I'd translate it with woltage swing, but I strongly suggest you wait for Tim to be online as he knows this stuff better than me, at least as far as English vocabulary is concerned. :)

    "Voltage surge" or "power surge" are more common if you are talking about potential damage to electronic components.
    This is why we by "surge protectors" to plug our computers into.

    But I also support "voltage swing" as a possible translation, if we are talking about subtle changes in voltage that might not be damaging to hardware.

    I found it under the title Electrical Installation - Distribution Board

    In the contract it is written: Per maggior chiarezza, si precisa che si intendono comprese tuttle le riparazione necessarie a seguito di fulmini, sbalzi di tensione, erosione da topi o altri animali, corto circuiti, gelo.

    I also don't know exactly what erosione da topi is and gelo too. Is there such thing as erosion by rats and freezing cold?

    Yes. Rats might bite the wires, therefore causing a damage.
    As we are talking about damage, I think "power surge" is the appropriate translation. Right, Tim? :)
     
    I would probably go with "power surge", without any further information.
    A "power surge" is something that the Power Company is responsible for,
    but the contract may be referring to repairs due to power surges,
    or they want a "line conditioner" to decrease the chance of a power surge.
